Best beaches near Rome

Going to Rome on vacation or on vacation, do not forget that 25 kilometers from the Eternal City the waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea splash (Mare Tirreno). Half an hour by train - and you are already on the beach. And around Rome there are many lakes heated by the hot Italian sun. And if during a walk along the Roman streets there is a desire to swim - it can always be fulfilled, and gin is not required for this.

Sea resorts

When going to the sea, keep in mind that in Italy there are almost no public beaches. Most of the coast is given to private companies, so you will have to pay for a place in the Italian sun. The usual cost of one day on a paid site called stabilimenti is 10-15 euros.

Certainly, the vocabulary of vacationers will be enriched by the new Italian word - boar (cabana). This is a canopy under which you can put a sunbed when the sun becomes too bright. In addition to cabana, paid beaches have other advantages: clean locker rooms, showers, lifeguards on duty all the time. Italians rarely wear one-piece swimsuits, even older women prefer bikinis, and topless on the beach is quite common.

Many beaches around Rome are awarded the Blue Flag., which is awarded for the purity of water and the coast, the availability of at least minimal amenities, as well as the adequate work of rescuers and providing access to people with disabilities (wheelchairs).

Lido di Ostia

Lido di Ostia not as glamorous as most Italian resorts, but located near Rome.

You can get to Ostia for just 1.5 euros, as there is a regular 100-minute ticket for public transport.

Take metro line B to the Piramide stop and take the train to Cristoforo Colombo and after about 25 minutes get off at the Ostia Lido centro station or the next Ostia Stella Polare. By the way, if you arrive at Fiumicino airport in the evening, then you can very well choose a hotel in Ostia for an overnight stay.

Where to stay in Ostia:

Sperlonga (Sperlonga)

Sperlonga is far from the closest resort to Rome, the journey will take about two hours. However, a blue flag beach, clear sands and idyllic views are worth the time spent on the road. From Rome you need to get to the station Fondi-Sperlonga, the ticket will cost 6.9 euros. In Fodni-Sperlonga you will need to take a bus (the bus schedule is coordinated with the train schedule), which takes you to Sperlonga in 15 minutes. A bus ticket costs a little more than 1 euro.

Fregene

Fregenje is the beach of those who want to relax like a real Roman. After a day on the sunny streets of Rome, head to the beach, located 37 kilometers from the capital, which is not far from local standards.

Getting to Frezhene is easy: Half an hour by train (FL5 line, ticket costs 2.6 euros) from Termini Station in the direction of Civitavecchia to Maccares-Fregene station, then 4 kilometers by bus - and you are at the epicenter of nightlife. By the way, Santa Marinella is located on the same branch (about it a little later), and from the terminal station of this branch, Civitavecchia, you can reach a whole scattering of beaches: San't Agostino, La Frasca and Pirgo.

Recommended Hotels in Fregen:

Santa Marinella

Santa Marinella is a pleasant exception to the rule, getting to this resort from Rome is easy! The journey from Termini Station to a small seaside town will take about an hour and will cost 4.6 euros. From the station to the sea can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. This location attracts many residents of the metropolis, so Santa Marinella is crowded on weekends, especially the part of the coast where free access is open.

Where to stay in Santa Marinella:

Anzio

The beaches in Anzio stretch for 12 kilometers, they are considered one of the cleanest in the Lazio region, which confirms the Blue Flag. Here, travelers will find the turquoise sea and golden sand. The train will cover 90 kilometers between Rome and Anzio in an hour, you need to get off at Nettuno station. A one-way ticket will cost 3.6 euros.

Of the cultural attractions in Anzio, the military museum (Museo dello Sbarco di Anzio), as well as the archaeological museum located in Villa Adele, built in the 17th century, are of interest.

Good hotels in Anzio:

  • Hotel L'Approdo - editorial choice
  • Serpa hotel

Terracina

The city of Terracina is not inferior in age to Rome. Two millennia ago, it was an important port in the Roman Empire, here ended the most famous road in Rome - the Appian Way. The temple of Jupiter, built in the 1st century BC, has been preserved to this day.

Modern Terracina is not as interesting for tourists as Roman attractions, but many people come to relax on its sandy beaches, which stretch for 5 kilometers and plunge into the azure waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea, breathe unique air.

Terracina takes second place among all resorts in the world in the content of iodine in the air.

You can get there by rail, taking the train in Rome to Naples. Get off at Monte S. Biagio station (ticket price 6.9 euros), from where Cotral buses go to the city.

To avoid transfers, it is most convenient to take a direct bus departing from the Rome Furmi terminal or order a transfer from Sergio in a Mercedes for 115 euros.

I recommend reading an article about the best hotels in Terracina, but you can simply choose any of the list below:

  1. Hotel acquasanta
  2. Hotel Poseidon
  3. Hotel mareazzurro
  4. Grand Hotel L'Approdo - our choice
  5. Torre del sole

Sabaudia

Sabaudia is another proud owner of the Blue Flag, golden sands and the cleanest sea. Despite the obvious advantages, it remains one of the least visited beaches in Rome, but only because of the inconvenient road. From Termini station, the train to Priverno-Fossanova takes 50-55 minutes, the trip costs 5 euros, but then you will have to travel for another 20 minutes by Cotral bus, and then go down the wooden stairs. Sabaudia has one more advantage: on its coast there are quite a lot of free sites, as well as campsites.

Recommended hotels in Sabaudia:

Pontian Islands (Isole Ponziane)

Pontian Islands - an archipelago located between Rome and Naples. You will have to get here by ferry, which goes from the coastal cities of Anzio, Formia and Terracina. Most hotels are located on two islands: Ponza and Ventotene. The journey by ferry will take from 50 minutes to an hour and a half.

In the summer months, only locals' cars are allowed on the islands, and from autumn through the spring, tourists can bring their car on a ferry.

Recommended hotels on the island of Ponza:

The Pontian Islands is perhaps the best choice on the coast of the Lazio region, if your schedule includes at least a few days for a beach holiday.

Other resorts

  • environmentally friendly islandVentotene-Cala Nave;
  • ancient Gaeta;
  • blue flag holder San Felice Circeo.

Freshwater beaches

Bracciano

A trip to Bracciano will cost you only 3 euros, a regional train will take you to the city of Bracciano, and you can walk from the station to the city park surrounding the lake. If there is no desire to travel by train, Cotral buses run from Rome to Bracciano.

Recommended hotels in Bracciano:

If you want to get acquainted with the Italian province - buy a ticket from two segments: Rome-Bracciano, Bracciano Viterbo (Viterbo). But in the city of Bracciano there is something to see, the local pride is Castello Odescalchi castle. A ticket to the castle will cost 7 euros, an excursion is held every hour.

Lake Martignano (Lago di Martignano)

Martignano is a small lake located near Bracciano. The true gem of the Lazio region is hidden among the hills. You can get to it from the city by bus, and then you will have to walk about 600 meters along a dirt road.

The beach is quite shady, thanks to many tall trees. On the lake and around it, only silent sports are allowed: sailing, horse riding, golf, motor boats are strictly prohibited. There are no usual beach entertainments and noisy bars, Martignano people come to enjoy the scenery and silence.

Recommended villas and apartments near Lake Martignano:

Useful Tips

  • Italians usually get a seasonal subscription to their favorite beach, which gives them the opportunity to get the best sun loungers located at the water's edge. If you plan to spend at least a week in the coastal city, it makes sense to purchase a subscription for this period.
  • You can buy tickets for Italian trains on the website: www.trenitalia.com. The site does not have a Russian version, but there is a useful instruction for independent travelers. On the same site you can check the ticket price and travel time.
  • Italian transport workers periodically organize strikes, they are always known in advance. Check if the strike does not hinder your plans, this can be done on the above site.
